Tennis Courts and Club House

The Club expanded from three to five courts as a result of winning Sport England Lottery funding in 1996, mainly justified by our substantial contribution to Junior coaching at that time. The courts are supported by a fully equipped traditional Clubhouse.

As can be seen from the video the Club occupies, probably one of the most attractive locations in the Cleveland League area, at the gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. On this website is now the facility for visitors to the village to hire the courts in the day time. Most evenings the courts are occupied by the members and by matches with visiting teams.

The Trustees of the Club have an exciting Development Plan to implement LTA recommendations for the future of tennis playing in the UK.

Stage 1 was implemented in 2017/2018.  We resurfaced our match courts with a state of art “Poraflex” surface that meet the changing needs of our village community with the 3rd agers playing longer, the young seniors wanting to play at the highest level they can achieve and the nurturing of the next generation of juniors. We hope the juniors will enjoy a lifetime of tennis playing as the senior members continue to do, whether in our area or join Clubs elsewhere, wherever their lives take them. You can read about the Opening Event by our MP Rishi Sunak in the past events section of the website.  You will also find a Youtube video (courtesy of Mike Newton) with interviews of our Chair, members and representatives of the LTA and Yorkshire Tennis.  It was widely reported in the local press.

Poraflex® (http://www.poraflex.com/poraflex.asp) is a high performance water permeable cushioned acrylic surface. The benefits have already been highlighted by visiting coaches such as a truer bounce helpful for teaching and improved safety. The cushioning was the main reason for acquiring the surface. A trial involving a member of the 3rd age, having had heel surgery and an over enthusiastic first team player recovering from a tendon injury had no pain or discomfort after an hour of singles play. Rusty Racquets, ex-players who thought their tennis playing days were over have returned.

2019 is the 80th Anniversary of Great Ayton Tennis Club. Keep an eye on all the Events being organised. To start our celebrations all the courts and clubhouse have been spring cleaned and the car park and footpath resurfaced with chippings supplied by Joseph Parr Ltd and laid by a volunteering members. Many thanks John, Craig, Brian and Barry.
